How we use AI

Everything at PyreHaven is designed, balanced, and playtested by real people. Our AI agents write the code from our plans, and nothing reaches players until a human has tested and approved it. NO art, in-game builds, or other artistic aspects are AI-generated unless they are clearly labeled as AI and not meant to be taken as a creative aspect (e.g., a placeholder for real art coming later, or an April Fools’ post).

These days, many people look down on the use of AI because of how it has been abused, to the point where some people stop thinking for themselves, and many projects go from really cool ideas to AI slop. Here at PyreHaven, we believe that AI can be used as an amazing tool to help bring dreams to life, but we also know that it is easy to fall into using it as a crutch, so we want to be transparent about how we use AI.

Writing

We use AI in a few main ways. The first is for writing. The way AI is used here is that a team member may write a statement, update, or document (for example, this one you are reading right now), then give that statement to an AI to be spell- and grammar-checked. The wording remains human; AI just does a quick sweep to point out any flaws or issues, and a human makes the final decision on what to publish. Some things, like changelogs and news posts, are drafted by AI, then read and edited by a human before they go out.

Research and planning

The second way AI is used is for research and planning. This is done by having AI write research reports on how we can accomplish our goals, and by having an AI read our plans and present questions for us to reflect on, to surface things we may have missed.

AI agents

The third and biggest way we use AI is our agents. Our main agent, P.H.R.E.D. (Phred), is used to write code. Once plans are done and everything is ready to be built, we hand off the plan to Phred one step at a time to build the code. We test and approve every change and review the code through GitHub to maintain cleanliness and our quality standards, and all gameplay decisions are made by humans. Phred writes code; humans come up with the ideas and do the playtesting to make sure everything is the way we want it. Sometimes Phred is also used for highly repetitive tasks. Phred also watches our services to make sure they stay running and to report bad actors or rule breakers. Apart from stopping obvious spam, he never acts against a player himself; he reports it, and a human decides. Phred never makes music, builds, or other art that is not clearly stated as AI-generated.

At PyreHaven, we are dedicated to preserving human creativity and ideas while taking advantage of this amazing new tool. Humans must stay involved in the work to keep the work ours and to keep everything from spiraling into just another copy of AI slop. Just like any human, we need to be checked by others. If you see us straying from this statement, leaning towards AI slop, and getting rid of creativity, please let us know (Get in touch). We want to stay dedicated to delivering high-quality, creative content, not mindless AI slop, and sometimes the lazy way can be tempting, so being called out means a lot.
